When the Deer Calls

When the deer calls,

I’ll follow on your heels

and keep you warm.

Three short verses open up a world in which conventional logic does not apply. The words do not behave as we are accustomed to, and yet the whole feels natural. They are an invitation to accept that meaning need not be unambiguous and that some things can be understood intuitively rather than through reason.

Eva Chudomelová uses this exact principle in her visual art, in which contrast and movement become key motifs. Her painting is spontaneous and full of vitality, characterised by an interplay of delicate and energetic gestures. She combines soft, colourful, organic planes with dynamic lines and drawn elements. Her paintings reveal a multi-layered quality, in which each layer carries its own story and the layers intertwine. Despite their contrast, however, the works come across as a harmonious whole.

A similarly open approach is evident in the artist’s drawings. Delicate pen-and-ink work is combined with bold strokes and colourful accents that transform its meaning. The artist deliberately leaves certain motifs unspoken, thereby creating space for the viewer’s imagination.

Creative work represents for Eva a source of energy, joy and discovery. She sees it as a journey that allows her to transcend everyday reality and look deep within herself, into places where clearly formulated thoughts or words do not yet exist. She is interested in the space where the conscious blends with the unconscious, certainty with uncertainty, and where new meanings emerge. In her work, she embraces the unknown as a natural part of the process and allows herself to be guided by intuition.

Eva Chudomelová’s work is based on a search for balance between spontaneity and concentration, delicacy and vigour. Her works do not offer a single ‘correct’ interpretation, but rather a space in which each viewer’s own feelings, memories and associations can be reflected.

The exhibition When the Deer Calls is an invitation to slow down, to tune into one’s own inner world and, above all, to embrace ambiguity.

Eva Chudomelová studied at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague. Her work focuses primarily on abstract painting and drawing, and she collaborates on projects at the intersection of performance art, dance and physical theatre. Since 2007, she has also worked as a graphic designer. She has collaborated, for example, with the Czech Centres, Laterna Magika / the National Theatre, Tanec Praha, Wo-man Publishing and ČVÚT (CIPS).
